What is light industry?

Light industry encompasses small-scale operations focused on the production of consumer goods.

These industries are characterised by their efficient use of resources, consuming less energy and water than medium industry or heavy industry, and leaving a significantly lower environmental footprint.

Light Industry Zones and Regulations

• A minimum buffer zone of 50 metres and a landscaped area of 10 metres should be maintained for all light industrial operations. 
  
• Noise levels must be kept minimal to avoid excessive disturbances.
   
• Stacks or chimneys are not permitted, ensuring no gaseous emissions are produced. 
   
• Industrial effluents must be limited to sewage, kitchen wastewater, and non-toxic solid waste. Hazardous or toxic materials are strictly prohibited, eliminating the production of scheduled waste. 
   
• Only non-hazardous raw materials are allowed, ensuring operations do not involve radioactive substances or other dangerous materials. 
   
• Height restrictions for structures must comply with regulations set by the Local Authority. 
   
• Industries are required to use electricity and gas as fuel sources. 
   
• Effluents from industrial processes must be treated on-site to meet Standard A or B of the Environmental Quality (Sewage and Industrial Effluent) Regulation 1979, depending on the site. 
   
• Compatibility between industries must be ensured, e.g., preventing conflicts between food-based and leather-based industries.
